Launched in January 2018, Nature Electronics is a monthly journal that publishes both fundamental and applied research across all areas of electronics. It also covers commercial and industrial aspects of electronics research. The journal aims to connect the work of scientists, engineers and industry, and provide analysis of the key issues shaping the field and the key technologies reshaping society. In this talk, I will provide a brief history of Nature and the Nature journals, discuss the background and aims of Nature Electronics, and explain the editorial process at the journal.
Owain joined Nature Research in 2008 as an editor for Nature Nanotechnology, going on to handle an array of topics in nanoscience and nanotechnology. In 2016 he began work as a strategy editor for Nature Research. Here he developed the editorial and publishing strategy of the Nature journals in the applied physical sciences and engineering, exploring, in particular, the fields of electronics, robotics and artificial intelligence. He became Chief Editor of Nature Electronics in 2017.
He has a PhD from the University of Cambridge, and was previously a Junior Research Fellow at King’s College, Cambridge.

J5 : Do I Still Care What Node the Technology Is?

What will the semiconductor industry do after two-dimensional scaling of the silicon transistor crosses the nanometer threshold, from 14 nm, 10 nm, 7 nm, 5 nm, 3 nm, 2 nm, 1 nm, to sizes below a nanometer? Will these advanced logic technologies continue to provide the energy efficiency required of future computing systems? Will new applications and computation workloads demand new device technologies and their integration into future systems? These are some of the most pressing questions facing the semiconductor industry today.
Do we still care what node the technology is? In this talk, I will give an overview of IC technology and the roadmap going forward.
Dr. H.-S. Philip Wong currently serves as Vice President of Corporate Research responsible for exploring new technologies for TSMC. Prior to joining TSMC, Dr. Wong is Professor of Electrical Engineering and holds the Willard R. and Inez Kerr Bell Professorship in the School of Engineering at Stanford University.
Dr. Wong and his students have won best paper awards at premier conferences such as the International Solid-State Circuits Conference (ISSCC) and Symposia on VLSI. He served as General Chair of the International Electron Devices Meeting (IEDM) and is currently the Chair of the IEEE Executive Committee of the Symposia on VLSI Technology and Circuits.
