Abstract :
 
Nature has been serving scientists and scientific communities since 1869 through publication of significant advances, and providing a forum for the reporting and discussion of news and issues concerning science. Nature-branded journals continue to strive to publish and communicate the most striking developments in science to broad audiences, and we are keen to strengthen the representation of applied sciences, including research from the semiconductor and electronics industries. This session will give insight into the Nature-branded journals, including Nature, Nature Electronics and Nature Machine Intelligence, their policies and procedures, as well our engagement with engineering communities.
 
Bio :

Dr. Luke Fleet is a Senior Editor at Nature, responsible for selecting and handling research papers in applied physics and electronics. Following a PhD from the University of York on semiconductor spintronics, in collaboration with the RIEC at Tohoku University, he undertook postdoctoral research in molecular magnets and organic electronics at Imperial College London and the London Centre for Nanotechnology. Luke joined Nature Research in 2013 as an editor at Nature Communications, before moving to Nature Physics early in 2014, and then to Nature in October 2017.

J5 : A Semiconductor Odyssey

Abstract :

2018 marks the 71 st anniversary of the transistor invention, 61 years of artificial intelligence research, the 60th anniversary of the integrated circuit, 52 years of Moore's Law, 51 years of floating gate memory, ..., and 31 years since TSMC created the pure-play foundry model.
 
Semiconductors will continue to be at the center of all these industry pillars. We now foresee silicon-wafer based 3Dx3D system scaling revolutionizing artificial intelligence and triggering a “big bang” in intelligent ubiquitous computing. The aggregate transistor count in a 3Dx3D "superchip" may reach the equivalent of the human brain in the 2020s. In this talk, we'll provide some reminiscences as well as inspirations for unceasing semiconductor innovation and the amazing Semiconductor Odyssey.

Bio :

Dr. Jack Yuan-Chen Sun is currently the Vice President of Corporate Research, and CTO of TSMC. He and his co-workers made key contributions to CMOS logic SOC platforms with highest routed gate density and computation throughput for the foundry/fabless industry. He advocated a holistic energy efficient 3Dx3D system scaling concept to extend Si-based semiconductor innovation and industry growth. He is an IEEE Fellow for his contributions to CMOS technology. He received the IEEE EDS J.J. Ebers Award recognition in 2015. He was awarded a TSMC Medal of Honor in 2011.
 
Dr. Sun received BSEE degree from National Taiwan University and MS and Ph.D. from the University of Illinois. Prior to joining TSMC in 1997, he held research and management positions, and made significant contributions to CMOS, Biploar, and BiCMOS with co-workers at IBM T.J. Watson Research Center. He has authored and co-authoerd over 200 papers and conference presentations, 12 US patents, and several ROC patents.
